Maybe the meaning of life

Jeremiah Lee hosts this month's IndieWeb Carnival on the meaning of life.

I'm honestly not being facetious when I say that, for me, the meaning of life is to find meaning in life. The universe is too vast and chaotic and wonderful and terrifying. There is no key to unlocking this. There is no purpose. It just is.

There's a Goethe quote (alleged, I am sceptical of quotes, I think it is though) along the lines of

Man is born, not to solve the problems of the universe, but to find out where the problem applies, and then to restrain himself within the limits of the comprehensible.

I've been in the trenches, in hand-to-hand grappling combat with the forces of nihilism and despair for the majority of my life. Clawing my way through the mud with them holding my ankles trying to pull me backwards into the abyss.

I'm not any longer! But I remember. And sometimes it whispers. So I've come to a "if nothing matters then everything matters" resolution. There is no meaning, so we can make meaning.

This approach also has flexibility. The meaning can change without it undermining previous meanings. Where and how I'm finding meaning can be one thing now, another thing in the future.

Right now I'm leaning towards trying to be a good person. That's what I want to be doing with my life. A good aunt, wife, sister, friend, member of my community. The people around me are what give my life meaning.
