In like a lion

March is possibly my favourite month? It's spring, it's some of my favourite people's birthdays, it's time to plant, it's getting light.

March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb

Or some variety on which. I like a brief "in like a lion, out like a lamb." My brother-in-law hates this saying. He has a full body revulsion to it. So naturally we try to slip it into conversation as often as possible.

In like a lion and out like a lamb is also me, during March. Coming in like a craggy mountain lion. Not a majestic well fed one. All mangy and matted. And by the end of March being a gambolling little lamb. Full of joie de vivre.

This despite the fact it's not at all unusual to have wintry snowy weather right through March and into April. Even if that happens though spring is still springing. The days are getting longer. Buds are coming out. The green garden waste bins are being collected. Progress is being made. Thus far March has been kind of April-showery.

The Lion and the Lamb, aka Helm Crag, overlooks Grasmere, in the Lake District. The very heart of Wordsworthshire. It's just a large outcrop that looks a little like it's leaning over a smaller outcrop. But it works. The drive along the A591 from Windermere to Keswick is one of my favourites. So much great stuff along that short route, very much including views of the Lion and the Lamb.

It's also a nice old weather proverb and we could do with hanging on to a few more than just "red sky at night."
